Procedures We Offer

Catholic Health offers advanced surgical and minimally invasive procedures to treat various urological conditions.

A sling procedure ensures you stay completely dry if you have urinary incontinence. The 7MinuteSling™ only takes seven minutes to apply. Patients usually go home the same day. The risk of complications is low.

The 7MinuteSling™ is offered at the Urinary Incontinence and Pelvic Medicine Center at St. Charles Hospital (Port Jefferson, NY).

Aquablation therapy using the AquaBeam Robotic System treats lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate. AquaBeam is the first FDA-approved surgical robot utilizing automated tissue resection to treat LUTS due to BPH.

Aquablation therapy combines real-time, multi-dimensional imaging, automated robotics, and heat-free waterjet ablation for targeted, controlled, and immediate removal of prostate tissue.

This new technology also allows for the preservation of ejaculatory and sexual function. Patients are usually able to return home the next day. Most men can resume all their normal daily activities three to four weeks after surgery.

Catholic Health offers aquablation therapy at St. Catherine of Siena Hospital in Smithtown, NY, and St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, NY.

Cryoablation is a surgical technique that destroys tumors by freezing them. It uses highly specialized cooling rods to freeze tumor cells without affecting vital structures such as blood vessels. Paired with laparoscopic surgery, cryoablation makes the treatment of small to medium renal masses less invasive. That means shorter hospital stays and fewer complications.

The da Vinci surgical system lets surgeons perform minimally invasive procedures with an advanced set of instruments. It is a robotic system that translates the surgeon’s hand movements at a console to real-time movements of the instruments. The instruments have greater range of motion than a surgeon’s hands and the surgery can be done through one or a few small incisions.

This technique offers significant benefits over traditional prostate surgery, including less pain and scarring, less risk of infection and blood loss, and faster recovery and shorter hospital stays.

This is commonly called enlargement of the prostate. The green light laser evaporates the tissue that is blocking the outlet of the bladder. It is most often done on an outpatient basis and has lower risk of significant bleeding and other potential complications that are seen with transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).

Laparoscopic surgery provides the benefits of minimally invasive surgery with a shorter hospital stay, less blood loss and a quicker recovery time.

Advanced Kidney Stone Treatment

The experienced team of urologists at Catholic Health offers minimally invasive techniques, including stentless procedures, to safely and effectively remove kidney stones. Stentless procedures help patients avoid the discomfort of a stent and facilitate a faster, less painful recovery.

This treatment uses high-frequency sound waves that create strong vibrations to break the stones into tiny pieces that can be passed in urine. This is the most minimally invasive procedure for a stone as nothing enters the body.

A scope is inserted through the urethra and bladder and into the ureter. A laser is then used to break up the stone. A small tube called a stent may be temporarily placed in the ureter to relieve swelling and ensure that the urine flows properly after the stone is removed. This is a form of natural orifice surgery in which no incisions are made in the skin.

A small incision (less than half of an inch in size) is made in the back, and a thin telescopic instrument called a nephroscope is inserted directly into the kidney. An ultrasound probe breaks apart and removes the stones. This is generally utilized for larger and more complex stones.

Advanced Treatment for Erectile Dysfunction

Catholic Health has a team of experienced urologists who offer advanced treatments for erectile dysfunction (ED). Treatment for ED depends on the cause and may include lifestyle changes or medication. If those treatments are unsuccessful, the following treatment options may be effective.

Also referred to as a penis pump: it is a plastic tube that is placed over the penis to help with ED. The device consists of a plastic cylinder and pump, which creates a vacuum that pulls blood into the penis creating an erection, and a constriction ring that helps to maintain it.

More permanent treatments include surgical implants, where a penile prosthesis is surgically inserted. Two types of implants are commonly used to treat ED:

  • Inflatable Penile Prosthesis: A pump and two cylinders are placed within the erection chambers of the penis, which causes an erection by releasing a saline solution.
  • Semi-rigid Penile Prosthesis: Two semi-rigid but bendable rods are placed within the erection chambers of the penis, to allow manipulation into an erect or non-erect position.

Penile implants are usually not considered until other methods of treatment have been unsuccessful. Implants typically have a high patient satisfaction rate and can be an alternative solution for appropriate patients.
