Meeting the Needs of Long Islanders

As a not-for-profit, mission-based organization, Catholic Health is continuing the work of our women religious who founded hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and other Long Island agencies reaching back more than a century. We offer blood drives, free wellness seminars, support groups and other community health-related events and programs year-round.

To further help the medically underserved in Nassau and Suffolk counties, Catholic Health established its Healthy Sundays outreach network and Bishop McHugh Health Centers to deliver health screenings, education, vaccinations and other services to those without access to primary care. All Catholic Health hospitals belong to the Long Island Health Collaborative, a bi-county initiative established to promote good health in the region.

Serving the Health Needs of Long Islanders

Healthy Sundays exemplifies Catholic Health's mission to care for those in need. Launched in 2005, our Healthy Sundays outreach provides preventive health screenings and education to medically underserved communities on Long Island. Partnering with churches and community centers across Nassau and Suffolk counties, the initiative continues to grow thanks to the expertise of hundreds of Catholic Health volunteers.

Healthy Sundays addresses prevalent medical conditions, such as obesity, diabetes and hypertension, to improve quality of life and decrease morbidity and mortality. Free blood pressure and body mass index screenings, as well as flu shots, are administered throughout the year. Educational materials are provided in Spanish and English. We also host representatives from local community benefit organizations.

Bishop McHugh Health Centers

Catholic Health opened its first Bishop McHugh Health Center in Babylon, NY, in 2009 to meet the needs of medically underserved individuals. In 2012, our second Bishop McHugh Health Center opened in Hicksville, NY.

Both the Nassau County and Suffolk County centers have bilingual staff members and offer full histories, physicals and lab work-ups. Physicians work with each patient to obtain nominal-cost prescriptions at local retailers. Free and low-cost specialty referrals are made as indicated.

The Babylon clinic, supported by Good Samaritan Hospital, sees patients by appointment, with nearly all patients having previously received free cholesterol, blood pressure and/or other screenings through Catholic Health Healthy Sundays events in their communities.

The Hicksville center, affiliated with St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center®, works with patients to establish a full medical history and to provide physical examinations, lab work-ups, x-rays, flu shots, appropriate immunizations, and specialty referrals as needed. A low-fee, comprehensive diabetes education program is available at nearby St. Joseph Hospital in Bethpage, NY.
