About the Program

The academic year is organized into 13 four-week blocks. Each block provides protected time to focus on one learning environment at a time:

  • 2 weeks focused on inpatient training
  • 1 protected week of continuity clinic, with no inpatient responsibilities
  • 1 week for individualized learning, electives, scholarship or professional development

Across three years, residents complete 36 weeks of longitudinal continuity clinic plus 8–10 weeks of outpatient electives—guaranteeing at least 10 months of dedicated outpatient experience. Residents receive four weeks of vacation each year, available in flexible one- to four-week increments.

Residents care for patients across the full spectrum of internal medicine at St. Catherine of Siena Hospital and throughout Catholic Health's integrated network. Training includes complex inpatient care (wards and critical care), emergency medicine, ambulatory experience, and access to sub-specialists across the system.

Electives include cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, hematology and oncology, infectious disease, nephrology, pulmonology and rheumatology. Opportunities are also available in palliative care, hospice, addiction medicine, and pain management.

The curriculum builds from foundational clinical skills to progressive autonomy and multidisciplinary team leadership. Residents learn to deliver evidence-based, high-value care and to communicate clinical reasoning effectively through high-quality clinical documentation, presentations, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Protected didactics include:

  • Case-based sessions in clinical reasoning, differential diagnosis and acute care
  • A comprehensive internal medicine curriculum, with core topics revisited before graduation
  • Quality improvement and patient safety
  • Journal club and critical appraisal of medical literature
  • ABIM board review and annual In-Training Examinations
  • Simulation training in Catholic Health's simulation center

St. Catherine of Siena Hospital offers a limited number of third- and fourth-year internal medicine rotations. Students gain experience on inpatient units and in outpatient clinics, participate in resident conferences and journal clubs, and apply their clinical knowledge.

Applicants may be considered for an interview before USMLE or COMLEX Step 2 results are available. Step 2 must be taken and passed before the ERAS closing date for an applicant to be considered for the program's rank list.

International medical graduates are considered. Catholic Health supports J-1 visas for this program.
