St. Joseph Hospital Names New Chief Medical Officer

Catholic Health’s St. Joseph Hospital has named John Mathew, DO, Chief Medical Officer, recognizing a respected physician leader who has dedicated nearly two decades to Catholic Health and more than a decade to advancing patient care at St. Joseph Hospital.

In his new role, Dr. Mathew will provide clinical leadership across the hospital, working closely with physicians, nursing, hospital administration and clinical teams to advance quality, patient safety, physician engagement and the delivery of high-quality, compassionate care.

Dr. Mathew began his career with Catholic Health in 2007 as an emergency medicine physician at Good Samaritan University Hospital, where he later served as Associate Chair of the Emergency Department.

In 2013, he joined St. Joseph Hospital as Chairman Director of the Emergency Department. Over the past 13 years, Dr. Mathew has been an active member of the hospital’s medical staff and a dedicated physician leader, working closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing, hospital administration and clinical and operational teams to strengthen patient care, quality, safety and physician engagement.

In April 2023, Dr. Mathew expanded his leadership responsibilities when he was appointed Associate Chief Medical Officer of St. Joseph Hospital. In that role, he provided clinical leadership across the hospital and partnered with multidisciplinary teams to support clinical excellence, patient-centered care, quality, safety and operational improvement.

His commitment to emergency medicine also extends into the communities St. Joseph Hospital serves. Dr. Mathew serves as a medical director for several local fire departments, working closely with first responders and emergency medical services professionals. He has also been involved in EMS education, emergency preparedness and community education on topics including stroke, heart disease, first aid, pediatric and geriatric care.

A board-certified emergency medicine physician, Dr. Mathew earned his medical degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine at New York Institute of Technology.

His appointment reflects St. Joseph Hospital’s continued commitment to strong physician leadership, clinical excellence and collaboration as the hospital continues to expand services, invest in advanced technology and meet the evolving health care needs of the community.
