Catholic Health’s St. Catherine of Siena Hospital, together with local elected officials, St. Catherine Foundation board members and physicians from Long Island Spine Specialists, P.C.,(LISS), cut the ribbon this week on a $5 million operating room (OR) expansion designed to accommodate complex spine cases.
The new OR includes state-of-the-art intraoperative imaging technology, providing surgeons with real-time, 3D imaging of the surgical site to enhance precision and allow for a comprehensive visualization of the anatomy.
Last year, as part of St. Catherine’s journey to become a Spine Center of Excellence, Catholic Health welcomed five fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopedic spine surgeons and three multi-board-certified physiatrists from LISS. The Smithtown hospital celebrated the opening of its Center for Spine and Orthopaedics in August 2025. The renovated, post-operative inpatient unit—staffed with highly trained orthopedic and post-operative nurses, patient care assistants and expert rehabilitation specialists who work closely with a patient’s physician to support a safe and timely recovery—features spacious private rooms, a physical therapy and rehabilitation gym and both a patient and family lounge and a family waiting area.
“It is our hope that patients find comfort in knowing that they are in a healing environment, with a dedicated and compassionate medical care team who will assist patients on their road to recovery,” said Christopher Nelson, MBA, president of St. Catherine of Siena Hospital. “I am confident that St. Catherine’s Center for Spine and Orthopedics, along with our newly renovated, state-of-the-art operating room, will be a top regional destination for residents of Smithtown and surrounding areas to receive the best there is in spine and orthopedic care.”
