Today, Catholic Health's Mercy Hospital (Rockville Centre, NY), together with its philanthropic partners Rocco Trotta and the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, cut the ribbon on its newly upgraded emergency department (ED). The $6 million dollar project, considered to be phase 1 of the overall project, modernizes the patient care environment for its ED, which receives an average of 35,000 patient visits per year.
“The emergency department is the first point of entry for patients admitted to the hospital; therefore, updating our ED was crucial to meet the needs of the community and to address the evolving trends in health care,” said Mercy Hospital President Joseph Manopella. “Our upgraded ED will enable us to handle higher volumes and provide prompt attention to all who enter.”
The ED upgrade will alleviate overcrowding by re-configuring patient flow, allowing for more efficient direct care and evaluation during time-sensitive conditions such as strokes and cardiac emergencies.
Advanced technology will ensure timely diagnostics and optimized workstations for medical teams. The new layout will streamline processes, minimize wait times and enhance the patient experience.
“The modernization incorporates patient-centric design principles to create a more welcoming and empathetic setting for patients and their families,” Mercy Hospital Chairman of Emergency Medicine Robert Bramante, MD.
For first responders, the modernization included relocating the EMS triage closer to the ambulance bay to allow for more streamlined communication and coordination. For hospital staff, workspaces have been enhanced throughout the ED to allow for an improved work environment and a better field of vision to ensure patient safety.
“Our partnership with Catholic Health (CH) has honored our namesake Saint Frances Cabrini and our mission to improve access to quality health care for the most overlooked, underserved and excluded members of our community. Our support of the CH mobile clinics and other innovative programs have bridged the gap to eliminate barriers to care for New Yorkers most in need. With the addition of this newly renovated emergency room at Mercy Hospital, we are expanding our impact, ensuring that the neediest New Yorkers will receive timely, life-saving care with the respect and dignity they deserve. We are proud to support CH on Long Island in this critical investment in community health,” Mother Cabrini Health Foundation Senior Program Officer Marc Damsky.
Mercy Hospital hopes to begin work on phase two in the future which is expected to include plans to expand the square footage of the ED.
Mercy Hospital’s ED team was recognized by the Emergency Nurses Association with their Lantern Award—a highly valued recognition that signals excellence in a hospital’s commitment to quality, safety and a healthy work environment.
Additionally, Mercy Hospital has earned Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA), providing elderly patients with the necessary expertise, equipment and resources to deliver optimal emergency care.
