Three Catholic Health hospitals—St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center, St. Charles Hospital and St. Catherine of Siena Hospital—each earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization that sets standards for excellence in patient care, on its Spring 2025 Hospital Safety Survey. This national distinction recognizes each hospital’s outstanding achievements in patient safety and harm prevention.
“Delivering exceptional care to every patient, every day is a core part of our mission,” said Patrick O’Shaughnessy, DO, MBA, President and CEO of Catholic Health. “As our hospitals continue to receive top recognition for safety and clinical excellence, we integrate those best practices system-wide. This unified approach allows us to elevate care across all our facilities, and in doing so, help set new standards for the broader health care community. We’re proud to lead in safety and quality.”
This latest rating marks St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center’s 15th consecutive and 25th overall “A” grade for hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group. St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center has received more “A” grades than any hospital in New York State since the safety scores launched in 2012. Its nationally ranked cardiovascular services and innovations are now available at other Catholic Health hospitals, as well as many of the system’s Ambulatory Care sites. Every Catholic Health cardiologist is part of St. Francis Heart Center.
St. Charles Hospital has received 10 “A” grades from The Leapfrog Group. The hospital features four Centers of Excellence: Maternal/Child Services, Orthopedics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Robotic Surgery. The hospital has received numerous specialty certifications from The Joint Commission for Total Hip and Knee Replacement, Stroke and Palliative Care. Most recently, St. Charles received prestigious recognition from the Surgical Review Corporation as a Center of Excellence in Robotic and Hernia Surgery, as well as recognition from the American Heart/Stroke Association for outstanding stroke care and Type 2 diabetes. In addition, St. Charles Hospital is recognized as the region’s most comprehensive rehabilitation provider and is the only hospital on Long Island with CARF-accreditation for its inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation program for children and adults.
This is St. Catherine of Siena Hospital’s fifth “A” grade from The Leapfrog Group. The hospital has three specialty certifications from The Joint Commission for Sepsis, Stroke and Palliative Care, and is recognized by the American College of Emergency Physicians as a Geriatric Accredited Emergency Department. In addition, St. Catherine’s breast health program has been recognized by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. St. Catherine of Siena Hospital continues to expand its clinical excellence, recently opening a newly renovated section of the emergency department and introducing award-winning cardiac services from St. Francis Heart Center, located now on St. Catherine’s campus.
“Patient safety and well-being are central to Catholic Health’s commitment to excellence, and we’re proud to consistently earn top marks from The Leapfrog Group.” said Jason Golbin, DO, MBA, executive vice president and chief medical officer at Catholic Health. “By embedding safety into every aspect of our care, we not only deliver superior clinical outcomes but also foster the trust and confidence our patients and their families deserve.”
