Leading with the heart
Paul Giunta, RN, of Good Samaritan University Hospital, is the recipient of the 2025 Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship, which is supporting his pursuit of his master’s degree in nursing. The scholarship honors the late Long Island native and highly decorated U.S. Navy SEAL (Sea, Air and Land) officer who distinguished himself for his outstanding bravery and dedication to his mission.
“It’s an incredible honor and one of my proudest accomplishments to receive this scholarship,” said Paul. “Knowing that Michael valued education deeply makes it even more meaningful. Because of his legacy, I’m able to pursue my MSN and grow both personally and professionally.”
Paul began his career eight years ago as a certified nursing assistant at Our Lady of Consolation, and now works as a registered nurse on the B Unit at Good Samaritan. “I love being able to directly impact patients’ lives while supporting and mentoring fellow nurses to grow in their practice,” he said.
Driven by a lifelong desire to help others, Paul was drawn to health care early on. “Nursing allows me to combine compassion with critical thinking to make a real difference.” He especially feels as if he’s making a difference when a patient or their families express gratitude after receiving care.
The power of healing also comes through when Paul and his colleagues get creative to make a patient feel better. One night when a patient was feeling down, he and his co-workers played the patient’s favorite song and danced bedside with the patient’s family. This small, spontaneous act brought a smile to the patient’s face. “Moments like that remind me how powerful teamwork and the joy of healing can be,” remarked Paul.
Dedicated to his nursing profession and caring for others, when asked if he has words of wisdom for new applicants, Paul stated, “The clinical skills will come with time, but leading with the heart is what truly makes a great nurse.”
