GSUH Surgical Symposium

Catholic Health’s Good Samaritan University Hospital hosted a Surgical Symposium for local students as part of the “We Care - Careers in Health Care” internship program. St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School students learned hands-on surgical skills from a cardiothoracic surgeon, observed an anesthesiologist demonstrate the proper way to intubate a patient, and tested out a high-tech surgical robot.

Founded in the fall of 2021, this opportunity is offered as an elective to upperclassmen and lasts two semesters. Students receive educational credit for their participation, and completion of the course appears on their high school transcripts.

“Seeing firsthand the dedication of the doctors, nurses and staff who volunteered their time and talents to showcase the many workings at Good Samaritan’s Surgical Symposium was truly amazing,” said St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School Principal Vincent Albrecht. “This program was an outstanding experience for our students to engage in and ponder where they will be able to use this experience in their future educational or career endeavors. We’re grateful to Good Samaritan University Hospital for this wonderful and successful educational opportunity.”

During the 20-week semesters, St. John the Baptist students have been shadowing managers across various hospital departments, culminating in the Surgical Symposium, which took place in one of Good Samaritan’s operating rooms.

“Health care is a vast and varied field,” said Good Samaritan University Hospital President Dr. Justin Lundbye. “From administrative roles to the coordination of surgical schedules to keep an operating room running smoothly, there are a wide array of career paths that a hospital, like Good Samaritan, can offer.”
