Fostering Excellence in Dentistry

The Dental General Practice Residency Program at Good Samaritan University Hospital St. Charles Campus is an educational program designed to provide clinical, didactic and hospital experience at the post-doctoral level. The program prepares residents in diagnosing and providing dental care in the context of each patient’s total health care needs.

The Dental Residency Program is a general practice residency (12-months) program and is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) through 2029. The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education.

About Our Program

  • Program year is July 1 through June 30 of the following year
  • Four residents will be accepted annually
  • Salary is $70,000 annually
  • Meal plan and scrubs allowance included
  • Medical and dental insurance is available
  • Malpractice insurance is provided
  • Clinic Hours: 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
  • Work hours extend beyond clinic hours to include rounds, inpatient consults, emergencies, surgeries and lectures.

The objectives of our advanced education program in general practice:

  • To refine and advance knowledge and clinical skills in the practice of dentistry.
  • To provide preventative and restorative dental care to patients in the community with emphasis on services for individuals with physical and developmental disabilities.
  • To work with patients in a manner that is professional, builds rapport and confidence, respects patients’ rights and dignity, puts patients’ interest first and maximizes patients’ satisfaction with dental care.
  • To participate in community outreach programs to improve access to oral health care and to reduce the incidence of oral disease.
  • To develop in residents the ability to function in the hospital setting as a member of an interdisciplinary health care team.
  • To provide a broad understanding of the inner-relationship of dental and medical care to the physical, social and emotional needs of the patients.
  • To develop in residents a sense of responsibility to the dental community in which he/she practices as evidenced in their participation in professional associates, civic associates, voluntary community screening activities and teaching programs.
  • Treat patients in clinics
  • Perform pre-operative H&Ps/assessments
  • Assist in surgical cases, write orders, conduct daily rounds on inpatients and ambulatory surgery patients
  • Attend all required lectures, including those assigned by the program director (e.g., local study groups)
  • Provide on-call coverage to the Emergency Department
  • Represent the program at student events (e.g., Greater New York Dental Meeting)
  • Attend and pass ACLS course
  • Prepare and present cases and journal articles monthly
  • Students are required to reside within 15 miles of the St. Charles campus (Port Jefferson, NY) for the duration of the residency
  • Residents are required to provide their own transportation on a daily basis
